PhantomPLUS is ideal for anyone currently using VideoPLUS as VideoPLUS will not be available once the switch-over from analogue to digital is complete. PhantomPLUS provides an easy method to continue recording your favourite programs.

PhantomPLUS is first ‘taught’ the commands necessary to control your recorder and the channel number necessary to record from your digital receiver. It is attached to the digital receiver’s “VCR” socket by means of the plug-through connector, and the main unit is attached to the side or top of the receiver or recorder by its magnetic base. Once fitted PhantomPLUS can be forgotten and will never need reprogramming unless you upgrade your recorder.

All you have to do thereafter is to select your desired programs via your digital receiver’s on-screen guide or internal timer, select “AUTOVIEW” or “RECORD” as necessary, (depending on your receiver) and PhantomPLUS will take care of the rest.

When the program is over it will stop recording and switch the recorder back to standby.

In operation PhantomPLUS is powered entirely from the digital receiver.

Case History

Before listing this item we tested it using a Thomson Freeview receiver and Tatung VCR.

We attached the PhantomPLUS to the VCR output on the Freeview box. Pointed the VCR remote at the PhantomPLUS and followed the simple routine for on/off, channel selection, record and stop. (The PhantomPLUS only has two buttons so is simple to setup)

We then selected a program from the Freeview's program guide, inserted a tape in the VCR and sat back to see what happened. At the allotted time there was activity from the PhantomPLUS at which point our VCR turned itself off.....oops..... we forgot to put the VCR to standby.

For our second attempt we selected another program and this time turned the VCR off (standby) and et voila.... at the allotted time the VCR turned itself on, changed to the correct channel (AV), recorded the program and then turned itself off. With the freeview box's repeat option on the timer, there's no reason to miss programs even when away on holiday.

We are tempted to test the ease of use of this product by giving it to some children and see how they get on..... watch this space....

UPDATE..... We gave in to temptation and the Phantom Plus PVR was given to 11 and 13 year old sisters who's biggest problems were understanding what the Phantom Plus did (as we did not want to give them too many clues) and deciding which one was going to press the buttons on the PVR and on the remote.
